Although reluctant to show it physically, Tristan was highly impressed. This woman knew what she was doing, he could tell that simply by hearing what she had ordered. He would have liked to say that it was her smarts that caused him to like her, but that would have been a lie. If he could pull himself out of the bitterness, and the sheer disdain for females he could see that it was all down to how dang pretty she was. But he knew even then that behind those looks was a powerful mind powerful of rankling him without even trying.
Despite how breathtaking she was to look at, his views were still pretty dismal, and he chose to ignore her appearance and stare blankly down at the wood of the table instead. When she gave him permission to partake of the bourbon (he still couldn't quite believe it was that that she had ordered) he snatched it up quickly. The unscrewing of the cap, the smell and the way the liquid trickled into the glass sent shivers down his spine. It was...heavenly.
Her next words, spoken through a grin had him somewhat riled. It was like she was cross-examining him with just a swoop of her eyes. It made him uncomfortable. He wondered if Vampires could read thoughts, and whether that was what she was doing. His fists clenched at the thought.
"Heard all the rumours, decided to question 'em,"
....
"Though I can't say I don't question whether or not this is just a screwed up hallucination that I've caused through my own drunken habits. If it is I guess it'll be over soon anyway, not having any cash left and all..."
He took a mouthful of his drink, swirling the glass before briefly looking up to glimpse her through the veil of smoke between them. Earlier he had allowed her to see a side of him that he did not like, he had exposed his vunerability. Now that he was certain she was definitely more than just human, he felt angry. Though her sentiments had been nothing but nice so far, he had allowed a predator to see him when he was weak. He could not let that happen again. "Not that I can't find my way, of course,"

Kali couldn't help but laugh at his comments. She herself had felt much the same way once, and in fact still had odd moments of the reoccurring feeling. What if everything was just all a dream? Or, as Tristan had put it....a screwed up hallucination? Perhaps she would wake up at any moment and find herself back in that little cottage, her Grandmother watching the fire with poker in hand, whilst Ranyia played on the ramshackle swing outside. What if none of the sorrow that followed such happy days was real? It could have been a nightmare, a terrible, terrible one but a nightmare nonetheless.
Naturally it wasn't. Only a fool would dwell on such hope. No, her final years as a mortal, and the ones that followed as a Vampire were all too real, from the loss of her Grandmother to the swoon she felt after feeding.
All.Too.Real.
....Kali had to say she didn't doubt that this man could look after himself. In a normal place, in a normal city...which was exactly what RavenBlack was not. If he hadn't even known what he was then how was he to know about all the other hideous creatures lurking about the city?
Not all Vampires were as accommodating as she was.
Werewolves, she found, often had horrible tempers.
And as for all the other beings....the half-demons and part-kittens and God only knew what else!....
RavenBlack was simply not safe for somebody who was ignorant.
"And I suppose you just expect to sleep in an alleyway tonight and not be mauled?....oh and that's not even counting the fact that by morning tomorrow you'd be all burned up!"
Not that Tristan didn't seem to have a lot of fight in him. Kali couldn't help but think how he reminded her of an unbroken horse, one that needed gentling down. In her experience, they were generally anxious to come right up and take a lump of sugar and get petted, but instinct and stubborn pride kept spooking them so that they don't stay put for very long. That was too things they both had plenty of, instinct and stubborn pride....but there was something that was keeping Kali with her hand out, and she felt as though something kept bringing him back to it.
Kali had never had the patience for breaking horses.
Because they tended to break her.

This Kali seemed very protective of him, although they'd only just met and he had showed no real signs of needing to be mollycoddled. Tristan supposed it was just in her nature to want to look out for people, perhaps she was just that kind of person. But the odd feelings he felt were there just the same; nobody since Celia (in the early days of their relationship) had really shown any kind of worry for him. It was like being a kid again and believing Dad could keep the monsters under the bed from getting him as he slept. Only this time the monsters were real, and instead of leaving the closet light on he had his gun in his lap to keep them from coming through the window and ripping Tristans throat out.
The irony of the fact that the person watching over him now was one of the monsters herself didn't go unnoticed. Nor did the fact that he had joined the ranks himself.
"And I suppose you just expect to sleep in an alleyway tonight and not be mauled?....oh and that's not even counting the fact that by morning tomorrow you'd be all burned up!"
He winced ever so slightly at her words. Yes, he had planned to do just as she described without giving it a second thought. He'd done it in other cities well enough, hiding in dumpsters in the quietest of back-alleys during the daylight hours seemed totally safe to a man like him. But perhaps what she was trying to get at was that RavenBlack was different...something Tristan had not been willing to accept until now. Frowning, he rested one arm upon the table top and leaned his head on it, breathing in the smoke from her cigarette.
He was not sure what to say or do. He felt more and more lost, struggling at the bottom of a dark hole with nothing to grab onto, no way to escape. The only option was to swallow his fear and feign indifference.
"Doesn't matter much to me at this point. I've nowhere to go, nobody to see and I sure as hell ain't gonna make myself into some kind of prissy charity case."

[OOC: Fast-forwarded, as agreed on both sides]
After several more hours of drinking and discussion (During which Kali learned little about Tristan, but he a lot about her as she had done most of the talking) the time was noted. In but a few more hours daylight would be upon them and Tristan had still not gone about finding somewhere to stay. Kali, too compassionate (and not wanting to be guilt-ridden) had offered him money at first, so he could stay in a hotel maybe. Pride had not allowed his acceptance of the offering. And the two bantered incessantly back and forth until an agreement was made.
"You could sleep on my sofa. It's not much but it's somewhere, isn't it? And don't tell me that this is charity....it's a...friendly offering.
....
The front door slammed behind them, and after a few seconds of scraping at the walls in the dark (for the life of her Kali never remembered where the light switches were located) hallway, living room and kitchen were illuminated in that wonderful, yellow glow.
And it was made entirely obvious that Kali was not used to having people over, at least not in this little house. The living room was located on the left as you walked a little up the hallway, and it was where she led Tristan...picking up things and sorting as she went. There were books everywhere. Shelving for them lined one whole wall, but still there were plenty just lying around, half-opened or stacked one atop another. She gathered them all up in one arm, gently putting them back in their proper place before moving over to her mahogany desk.
"The whole house isn't like this, I promise...I just get carried away and forget to tidy up," She mumbled a sort of apology as she organized the papers and notebooks strewn over her desk and upon her PC's keyboard.
When she was done there she crossed over to the other part of the room, putting DVDs back onto their shelves and whisking a couple of used wineglasses into the kitchen.
After these moments of flurried activity, she finally appeared in front of Tristan. "These curtains," She said, pointing to the large, velvet drapes around her windows, "Cannot be tampered with. I keep them pulled-to all the time. The sunlight won't get in as long as you don't fiddle with them...so, be careful with that,"
She paused, nodding to herself as if checking off a list.
"The kitchen is always well-stocked, so you can help yourself...Shower is just down the hall...and I'll be upstairs if you need me at all. So, goodnight.
In normal circumstances she wouldn't have been so quick to leave a persons company, but from the moment they'd met Tristan had given her the feeling that maybe he wanted to be on his own more often than not. It was late anyway, and he probably wanted some shut-eye as much as she did. Grabbing the door handle with intention to close it behind her, she was about to leave, until she noticed something.
Man, she was a bad host.
"You'll find blankets and pillows in that chest by the bookshelf," Her annoyance at her mistake was covered by a wink before she disappeared into the hallway and up the stairs...
